Low Exchange Reserves Suggest Futures Traders Are Over-Leveraged

Published at: June 24, 2020

Cryptocurrency market data aggregator Glassnode has reported that the number of Bitcoins (BTC) held on centralized exchanges has fallen to a 12-month low.

The decline in exchange reserves comes amid numerous recent records for open interest in Bitcoin futures contracts, suggesting that many traders may be over-leveraged.

Less than 15% of Bitcoin is held on exchanges

On June 24, Glassnode reported a new yearly low in the number of BTC held on exchanges, with more than 2.624 million BTC. As such, the number of Bitcoin custodied on centralized exchanges has fallen by 10% since February of this year.

The decline in coins held on exchange has come amid surging open interest, or OI, in Bitcoin futures, with Glassnode noting a new three-month high for OI on Bitfinex on the same day.

The combined Bitcoin OI across leading futures exchanges broke above $1 billion for the first time during May, before quickly ramping up a further 50% to tag $1.5 billion earlier this month.

The increase was driven in part by surging activity on Chicago Mercantile Exchange’s BTC markets, with volume increasing 1,000% during May.

Is DeFi siphoning coins from exchanges?

However, the combination of expanding open interest alongside declining reserves held on exchanges suggests that many traders may be heavily leveraged — with OI continuing to expand despite the apparent drop in available collateral.

The rising popularity of decentralized finance protocols may also have contributed to the diminishing number of coins held on exchanges. The total value of assets locked in DeFi projects has more than doubled from $700 million to $1.6 billion since mid-January, according to DeFi Pulse.

Investors using synthetic Bitcoin to access Ethereum-based DeFi applications may also be using futures to hedge against their underlying assets, as might speculators seeking to lock in the fiat-value of their holdings amid the recent choppy consolidation in the BTC markets.

The bullish momentum that had been growing across the cryptocurrency ecosystem over the past few days came to a screeching halt on Sept. 24 as news that China had banned cryptocurrency transactions made the rounds on social media and initiated an abrupt fall in the price of Bitcoin (BTC) from $45,000 to $42,000. After the initial knee-jerk reaction and a brief period of time for the market to digest the news, traders jumped back in to buy the dips on several altcoins, which helped some of the losses seen earlier in the day. Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView …

Overview of Software Wallets, the Easy Way to Store Crypto
Similar to a bank account for fiat currency, a crypto wallet is a personal interface for a cryptocurrency network that provides reliable storage and enables transactions. Whether a cryptocurrency is securely stored or not, much depends on the wallet, which is only as secure as its private keys. Wallets are generally either hot or cold. The funds in a hot wallet can be spent at any time, online. A cold wallet functions in contrast: not intended for regular cryptocurrency transactions, but funds can be received at any time. Wallets can also be divided into three groups: software, hardware and paper. …

5 ways derivatives could change the cryptocurrency sector in 2022
We‘ve all heard stories of billion-dollar future contracts liquidations being the cause of 25% intraday price crashes in Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) but the truth is, the industry has been plagued by 100x leverage instruments since BitMEX launched its perpetual futures contract in May 2016. The derivatives industry goes far beyond these retail-driven instruments, as institutional clients, mutual funds, market makers and professional traders can benefit from using the instrument‘s hedging capabilities. In April 2020, Renaissance Technologies, a $130 billion hedge fund, received the green light to invest in Bitcoin futures markets using instruments listed at the CME. These …

Top 5 cryptocurrencies to watch this week: BTC, MANA, MKR, ZEC, KCS
Bitcoin (BTC) has been relatively calm during the weekend as crypto traders try to rebuild the markets after the Terra LUNA debacle. With macro factors not supportive, several analysts expect the recovery to be a slow grind. Crypto research firm Delphi Digital said in a recent report that the rally in the United States dollar index (DXY) had pushed its 14-month relative strength index “above 70 for the first time since its late 2014 to 2016 run up.” Historically, 11 out of 14 such instances had resulted in the DXY rising about 5.7% over the following 12 months. If the …
