Where are the best APYs for stablecoins? | Find out now on The Market Report!

Published at: Jan. 18, 2022

In this week’s episode of “The Market Report,” Cointelegraph’s resident experts showcase where to find some of the best stablecoin yields in decentralized finance, or DeFi.

But first, market expert Marcel Pechman carefully examines the Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH) markets. Are the current market conditions bullish or bearish? What is the outlook for the next few months? Pechman is here to break it down.

Next up, join Cointelegraph analysts Benton Yaun, Jordan Finneseth and Sam Bourgi in a debate over the best platforms for stablecoin yields. Will Bourgi’s pick, Convex Finance — with its sizable community, reputation and multiple ways to earn yield — come out on top, or will Yuan’s choice of Beefy.Finance — with its multichain yield optimizer — outshine the rest? Not to be outdone by Bourgi and Yuan, Finneseth lays down his reasoning for picking Anchor Protocol, which pays out yields in TerraUSD (UST). Which protocol do you think has the most potential? Leave a comment, and vote in the chat room poll!

Stick around after the showdown for insights from Cointelegraph Markets Pro, a platform for crypto traders who want to stay one step ahead of the market. Using Markets Pro, the analysts identify two altcoins that stood out this week: Ocean Protocol’s OCEAN and Secret Network’s SCRT.

Do you have a question about a coin or topic not covered here? Don’t worry! Join the YouTube chat room and write your questions there. The person with the most interesting comment or question will be given a free month of Cointelegraph Markets Pro, worth $100!

DeFi and DEX volumes soar amid China’s crypto ban and US regulatory risk
Last week, China’s heavy-handed crackdown on crypto trading briefly sent shockwaves across the market as Bitcoin (BTC) and altcoin prices saw a sharp drop following the announcement, but as is the case with all things crypto-related, the market bounced back as resilient traders found other ways to participate in the market. Part of China’s goal in limiting citizens' ability to trade cryptocurrency seems focused on discouraging the use of cryptocurrencies and the growing decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem, but these maneuvers appear to be having the opposite effect, as the token price and protocol activity for projects like Uniswap and dYdX …

Nifty News: Ellen’s NFT auction flops, Oscars controversy, Kayne’s $1.8M sneakers and more
The much-hyped NFT sale by popular talk show host Ellen DeGeneres has fallen flat, with the comedian selling just five out of 10 available Gold editions of her “Woman With Stick Cat” nonfungible token for $2,500 on the Bitski platform. Another 64 people paid $100 each for an open Silver edition of the same NFT. The drawing appears to have been created with minimal effort in a bid to satirize the notion that any old celebrity-peddled junk will sell as an NFT. A Platinum video monologue about NFTs by DeGeneres fetched the highest price — $14,555. In total, the sale …

DeFi tokens see double-digit gains as Ethereum and Bitcoin chase new highs
Momentum in the cryptocurrency market is back on the rise on Nov. 8 after a solid rally from Bitcoin (BTC) placed the price back above $66,000 and Ether hit a new all-time high at $4,793. The gains from the largest two cryptocurrencies helped to kickstart a market-wide rally that lifted the total cryptocurrency market cap above $3 trillion for the first time. Unlike previous rallies where BTC would make significant gains at the expense of the altcoin market, this time a majority of tokens in the top 200 are likewise in the green with many projects seeing double-digit gains. Data …

Ethereum white paper predicted DeFi but missed NFTs: Vitalik Buterin
Rounding up the last decade, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin revisited his predictions made over the years, showcasing a knack for being right about abstract ideas than on-production software development issues. Buterin started the Twitter thread by addressing his article dated Jul. 23, 2013 in which he highlighted Bitcoin's (BTC) key benefits — internationality and censorship resistance. Buterin foresaw Bitcoin’s potential in protecting the citizens’ buying power in countries such as Iran, Argentina, China and Africa. However, Buterin also noticed a rise in stablecoin adoption as he saw Argentinian businesses operating in Tether (USDT). He backed up his decade-old ideas around …

Top 5 cryptocurrencies to watch this week: BTC, MANA, MKR, ZEC, KCS
Bitcoin (BTC) has been relatively calm during the weekend as crypto traders try to rebuild the markets after the Terra LUNA debacle. With macro factors not supportive, several analysts expect the recovery to be a slow grind. Crypto research firm Delphi Digital said in a recent report that the rally in the United States dollar index (DXY) had pushed its 14-month relative strength index “above 70 for the first time since its late 2014 to 2016 run up.” Historically, 11 out of 14 such instances had resulted in the DXY rising about 5.7% over the following 12 months. If the …
