Reddit’s Biggest Blockchain Advocate Just Resigned To Fight Racism

Published at: June 5, 2020

Alexis Ohanian, a millionaire tech entreprenuer and co-founder of online social platform Reddit, recently publicized plans for his personal fight against racism. These include his desire to see a member of the black community replace him at his current board position.

"I've resigned as a member of the reddit board, I have urged them to fill my seat with a black candidate," Ohanian said in a June 5 tweet.

The United States shows unrest

Over the past week and a half, cities across the U.S. have seen protests, with some cities also experiencing rioting and looting in response to the death of Goerge Floyd at the hands of a Minnesota police officer.

"I will use future gains on my Reddit stock to serve the black community, chiefly to curb racial hate," Ohanian said. "I’m starting with a pledge of $1M to Colin Kaepernick's Know Your Rights Camp," he added, referring to the former NFL player's youth campaign.

Ohanian has been active in crypto

One of the main hubs for crypto discussion, Ohanian's Reddit is home to a number of forums for discussion on various crypto projects. Forums r/cryptocurrency and r/bitcoin, among many others, yield active crypto-related conversation, with r/bitcoin achieving the 1 million subscriber count in late 2018.

Ohanian himself has direct crypto involvement. One of his funds put $5 million toward a blockchain game project. The Reddit co-founder even made Bitcoin and Ethereum price predictions in July 2018, calling for Bitcoin and Ethereum to return to their all-time price high ranges. Last month he also noted significant development in the industry.
