The first fundamental study of DeFi: From ideas to mechanisms to the new finance

Published at: Sept. 30, 2020

With its year-to-date growth of more than 15x in total value locked, and more than $11 billion committed to the protocols, decentralized finance (DeFi) has become a mainstay in the crypto industry, and a whole new industry in itself. Meanwhile, its shape as a concrete market has not been defined with substantial confidence.

A major shortcoming of DeFi research to date has been its focus on individual projects or simple metrics, such as financials. A systematic overview capturing the essence of the industry and professionally describing it in depth is missing. To address that, Cointelegraph Consulting and Byzantine Solutions have conducted fundamental research on decentralized finance, from the ground-up to complex effects and existential risks.

Redefine 2020: A Primer. Where Decentralization Meets Finance is a landmark study that aims to significantly raise the bar for future research on DeFi. It sets a precedent for a market-wide examination, from the core properties to complex inter-protocol effects and emergent dynamics.

The paper draws a complete map of the industry through common conceptual patterns, recurring ideas, typical problems inherent to the decentralized setting, and the approaches to address them. The high point of Redefine 2020 is the side-by-side comparison of traditional finance and its hindrances versus the natural properties that decentralized finance can leverage to build a better, more resilient system with much greater accessibility and lower friction.

Redefine 2020 is written by economists and industry professionals, it uses professional terminology and assumes the readers are familiar with the concepts of blockchains and smart contracts, as well as financial instruments and their applications.

Cointelegraph Consulting: Is Solana an ‘Ethereum killer?’
Solana has been a trending topic due to the successive weeks of price increases seen by its SOL token. At the time of writing, SOL traded at around $207, which is an 11,400% surge from less than $2 back in January. At its present worth, Solana sits among the top 10 cryptocurrencies by market capitalization with about $60 billion, claiming the sixth spot from Dogecoin (DOGE), according to Cointelegraph Markets. One of the likely catalysts of this bullish momentum is funding from investors led by Andreessen Horowitz and Polychain in June. Solana secured $314 million, which will be used to …

Trying to predict the price of a cryptocurrency? Should you use MVRV, stock-to-flow, NVT?
The fundamental value drivers of cryptocurrencies have been questioned a lot since the 2017 bull run. Professional investors that are considering an allocation into digital assets are wondering what the assets’ real value is. A recent report by crypto-asset manager Iconic Funds and Cryptology Asset Group, a leading European asset manager for crypto assets and blockchain-based businesses, aims to shed light on this topic. The fundamental value of each cryptocurrency depends on its unique use case, which makes it impossible to apply a single valuation method to every token. For example, Bitcoin (BTC) can be analyzed with traditional commodity valuation …

Cointelegraph Consulting: ERC-20 token's market cap overtakes Ethereum’s
The latest findings by Santiment, published in Cointelegraph Consulting’s biweekly newsletter, suggest that Ethereum is temporarily being ‘professionalized’. Since the September 2nd market crash, the combined market capitalization of all ERC-20 assets has overtaken Ethereum’s own market cap, with the differential between the two continuing to grow in favor of ERC-20 assets. This market cap ‘flippening’ points to the fact that the price of Ethereum has corrected more strongly than the ERC-20 ecosystem and has struggled to bounce back in the immediate aftermath. Perhaps unsurprisingly, it was the DeFi-related coins in particular that managed to bounce back much quicker than …

Cointelegraph Consulting: Deep diving with Ethereum whales
Covalent’s latest findings in Cointelegraph Consulting’s biweekly newsletter investigates the anatomy of Ether (ETH) whales. The data indicates that the top 10 ETH-only whales consistently hold roughly 5 million ETH, with the largest whale accumulating more than 25% of the capital. The wallet address of the largest Ethereum whale, much like the other seven whales in the ranking, is relatively young as they only started buying in 2019. Apart from the amount of Ethereum that the whales hold, another defining characteristic of the group is its investment behavior pattern: It goes long on its assets and, probably, on the ecosystem …

FTX CEO: SushiSwap probably wasn’t a ‘long-planned heist’
In the wake of the sudden departure of Chef Nomi, the original founder of SushiSwap, FTX exchange CEO Sam Bankman-Fried was left to sort out the mess. Cointelegraph interviewed Bankman-Fried about his Sushi-related adventures and his vision for the future of the project. Bankman-Fried became the holder of the keys to SushiSwap on Sep. 6, just over a week after the launch of the project. Chef Nomi handing these keys over was as sudden for him as it was for the rest of us, he said: “I was asleep on a beanbag and I heard a shout from someone [saying] …
