Tell Cointelegraph Your Banking Horror Stories by November 28 and win 3BTC!

Published at: Nov. 19, 2014

Cointelegraph and ShapeShift have launched a competition for the best anecdotal banking horror stories – it’s your chance to vent your anger and win 3BTC into the bargain!

We’ve all been there; we all know how it is: an innocent query or everyday problem turns into a reenactment of War and Peace, or a major mistake by your financial institution becomes a battle of epic proportions before one side emerges victorious.

Hours of your time wasted, sometimes your money as well. Not to mention the exercise in self-restraint involved in dealing with understaffed bank branches, bewildering hotlines and incompetent representatives.

Perhaps you’ve waged war with the banking sector and won, in which case, congratulations. At Cointelegraph, however, we’re giving you the chance to share your grievances with a wider audience, and reap considerably better benefits in the process.

From now until November 28, any reader can send us an article about the trauma he or she has faced while dealing with banking failures. No matter what form they’ve come in – big or small, moral or plain moronic – we want to hear from you.

All we ask is that you provide a well-written, substantial piece, backed up with relevant information such as the period in which the events took place and the name of the bank or institution involved.

To see what we’re looking for in your entries, take a look at these banking horror stories courtesy of Forbes, TransferWise and Huffington Post.

We’ve set up a competition entry page where you can get full details of conditions and find out how to enter – simply head over to get the inside story.

In return for your submissions, we’re offering publication of the best on Cointelegraph.com, as well as a prize of 3BTC for the most popular article as voted for by readers in our poll, which will be opened following the closure date.

Your article could feature on our homepage as early as December 5, so hurry and make sure your entry reaches us by November 28. The ultimate winner will be announced December 15!

3BTC in time for Christmas should help keep the bank woes at bay, courtesy of ShapeShift and Cointelegraph. We look forward to reading your submissions!

We asked for your craziest crypto story. These are the winners
Last month, Tradelize and Cointelegraph teamed up for a contest to hear your craziest crypto stories — casting a spotlight on some of your biggest successes and fails. You didn’t disappoint… and selecting one winner was impossible. Because of this, we chose two — with the lucky raconteurs sharing a 5,000 USDT prize between them. The first tale came from Timofei, who received a $100 gift from his grandmother in Russia. He decided to invest it in cryptocurrency — all while he followed his dreams of becoming a director in film school. Timofei was able to use the profits he …

Another inside job at Shapeshift cost the company nearly $1 million
Following the theft and repayment of $900,000 in Bitcoin (BTC), Shapeshift is now pursuing damages in court against its former senior software engineer, Azamat Mukhiddinov. "There was significant time lost and legal costs associated with the clean-up," Shapeshift's chief legal officer, Veronica McGregor, told Cointelegraph, noting that customer funds were safe throughout the ordeal. "ShapeShift is non-custodial, so no customer funds were ever at risk," she said. Working in a high level position for Shapeshift, Mukhiddinov allegedly used his access to the exchange's backend to steal roughly 90 BTC, worth nearly $900,000 in May 2020 at the time of the …

Cointelegraph announces the Top 100 Notable People in Blockchain 2021
Let’s get one thing out of the way: You will not agree with every selection on the Cointelegraph list of the Top 100 Notable People in Blockchain. In fact, you will almost certainly disagree, vehemently, with many of the people we’ve included on this year’s list. You will rage at the inclusion of [insert comedy villain here] and the exclusion of, say, Charles Hoskinson. Particularly if you are indeed Charles Hoskinson. You will seethe at the fact that Arthur Hayes is nowhere to be found. (We looked.) You'll eat your own... words because you once tweeted that John McAfee was …

Every asset manager must understand Bitcoin — Erik Voorhees
Shapeshift CEO Erik Voorhees has drawn a metaphorical line in the financial sand, stating that every asset manager should understand Bitcoin now based on its astonishing rate of return. Voorhees made the comments while retweeting data shared by analytics platform Messari co-founder Dan McArdle that shows Bitcoin has dramatically outperformed everything over the last decade. While gold has returned a 32% profit and the S&P 500 has tripled investors’ money, Bitcoin has posted an incredible 7,837,884% gain in ten years. Looking across its 10-year life, Voorhees believes Bitcoin is “vastly superior to any other investment.” He said that: “One could …
