Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has fired up a full Bitcoin node

Published at: Feb. 5, 2021

Twitter founder and CEO Jack Dorsey has fired up his own Bitcoin (BTC) node. On Feb. 5, the tech billionaire posted a screenshot of the Bitcoin node software Bitcoind running on his computer, meaning Dorsey now lends a hand in validating Bitcoin transactions.

Dorsey posted the screenshot along with the words, “Running #bitcoin”. The photo shows Dorsey’s computer in the midst of synchronizing with the Bitcoin blockchain, which requires that a user download the entire history of the chain to date. The Bitcoin blockchain is around 325GB in size at time of writing.

The synchronization process can take weeks depending on the computer and internet speed, and Dorsey’s screenshot shows that he’s only managed to synch up 2% of the chain so far.

When asked if he was running the node on a dedicated Raspberry Pi, Dorsey revealed he had set it up using an M1 Macbook chip — the latest in Apple’s line of laptop processors. Dorsey tweeted, “Starting from a scratch build on M1 first.”

Bitcoin nodes are different from Bitcoin miners in that they don’t compete for a share of the block rewards. Rather, each node hosts yet another immutable copy of the blockchain, helping increase overall network security. The number of full Bitcoin nodes in operation has fluctuated of late, landing somewhere between 7,000 and 11,000, according to recent data.

Bitcoin’s node-count recently surged to an all-time high. As reported by Cointelegraph, 11,613 Bitcoin nodes were in operation on Jan. 20. That number had dropped to 7,260 by time of writing.

Top 10 tweets of the year
Yes, yes, I know: You’re an excellent Twatter, and omitting from this list your one zinger that got 50 likes borders malfeasance. Likewise, this reporter is a negligent compiler of listicles for overlooking some spicy day where your favorite trader-nee-influencer colorfully described Brad Garlinghouse’s anatomy. If it’s any consolation, please know that I hate the hellsite just as much as you do. The year was terrible for almost all of the planet, and even though crypto enjoyed a strong secular bull market, everyone still managed to come together, rise above adversity, and treat each other horribly anyway. I looked up …

Defending Bitcoin’s Integrity in the Great Twitter Hack
Bitcoin (BTC) has made global headlines again because of the recent Twitter hack, but this time, we need to work harder to protect Bitcoin’s integrity and the progress the industry has made. The coordinated social engineering attack compromised the Twitter accounts of high-profile figures and organizations like Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates, Tesla founder Elon Musk, Amazon owner Jeff Bezos, former United States President Barack Obama and 2020 U.S. presidential candidate Joe Biden, among many others, to ask for Bitcoin in fake “giveaway” posts. When the story broke, the New York Times, BBC and other mainstream media outlets were quick to …

In response to an analyst's question regarding how cryptocurrencies play into the company's overall global strategy, Dorsey said the following during the company’s third-quarter earnings call on Oct. 26: “It [Bitcoin tipping] allows for much more speed. Both tipping subscriptions are new. These are products that we want to …
