Ethereum Co-Founder: Finding Satoshi Is Like Finding a Malware Author

Published at: April 6, 2020

Charles Hoskinson suggests applying stylometric techniques to find Satoshi Nakamoto, but there is a caveat.

Stylometrics

In an April 5 interview, Ethereum (ETH) co-founder and founder of Cardano (ADA) Charles Hoskinson suggested that the most effective way to find the person or team behind Bitcoin (BTC) is to apply stylometric techniques.

Stylometry is the application of the study of linguistic style, usually to written language. This technique had been previously applied to Satoshi Nakamoto’s writing without conclusive results.

Use the code instead

Hoskinson suggested instead of using Nakamoto’s writing, use his code. Hoskinson explained to Cointelegraph why this could be a more effective technique:

“Yes dramatically more efficient. Code stylometry is much more accurate. Here's a paper on the topic https://usenix.org/node/190845. It's commonly done to track malware authors and usually is very effective”.

Hoskinson profiles Satoshi

In the same interview, Hoskinson profiled Satoshi:

“They’re now in their fifties or sixties, were educated in the 1980s or early nineties, and brought up in a very particular school of computer science. Bitcoin script, alone, gives you a lot of indication of where that person was trained because it was based on a language called Forth, which is a very uncommon language, but it was used mostly in computer science pedagogy, especially in England and in the Eastern United States during that time period.”

Hoskinson concluded by saying that he has never applied stylometric techniques to Satoshi’s code and that:

“It’s never been an interest to me because, frankly, that person left the ecosystem and doesn't want to be doxed and Bitcoin has operated just fine since 2012. It's been eight years now and we haven't had any issues. So why do we need to bring the founder back?”

Perhaps the enigma of Satoshi Nakamoto will never be solved.

What industry leaders would wish for Bitcoin’s white paper 12th anniversary
While the crypto community decides whether Bitcoin (BTC) was born — or merely conceived — 12 years ago, the fact is that Oct. 31, 2008, remains one of the most notable dates in humanity’s modern history. Exactly 12 years ago, Satoshi Nakamoto published what some have described as “a new bible” — Bitcoin’s white paper. Designed as a brand new “purely peer-to-peer version of electronic cash,” many see the creation of Bitcoin as a response to a global financial crisis. Bitcoin Ransomware and Remote Working: What the Future Holds
The new work-from-home culture is gaining more traction than ever before as businesses, government departments and schools try to remain afloat while flattening the pandemic curve. This migration to remote working is a double-edged sword that creates a fertile land for cybercriminals to thrive on. There is no way that cyberattacks can be eliminated completely. The best that companies can do is minimize the frequency of the threats. What is ransomware? Cybercriminals use malicious software code to block people or organizations from accessing their computer systems until a ransom has been paid. Cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) have made it …

Charles Hoskinson: Blockstream Founder Adam Back 'Checks All The Boxes' as Satoshi
In a recent Cointelgraph interview, Ethereum co-founder and Cardano founder Charles Hoskinon said that he believes that Adam Back “checks all the boxes” as a Satoshi Nakamoto candidate. The puzzle of Satoshi’s true identity never seems to get old. Although Hoskinson admits that he does not have any hard evidence connecting the Blockstream’s founder to the pseudonymous Bitcoin creator, he did make a mental profile of Satoshi — Back seemingly has a perfect fit. Hoskinson believes that Satoshi was somebody, who lived either in Western Europe of the coastal United States, was comfortable with British English, and had a background …

Adam Back: Bitcoin is Enough, Satoshi Should Stay Out
In a Cointelegraph interview, Adam Back provided additional clarity on his perceived Bitcoin (BTC) maximalism. Blockstream’s CEO believes that Bitcoin is enough and there is no need for a multitude of derivative projects. Back said, “I think it's like TCP/IP the internet exists. We don't need 5800 TCP/IP copies trying to monetize and profiteer off pumpanomics or such. It detracts from value (I gather there are about 5,800 altcoins as of today)”. He noted that innovators should focus on Bitcoin instead: “It's modular, you can build anything you want using it, if you're trying to innovate, go ahead and innovate”, …

14 years since the Bitcoin white paper: Why it matters
Happy white paper day, Bitcoin. It’s been 14 years since Satoshi Nakamoto first sent an email to the Cypherpunk mailing list with the subject line, “Bitcoin P2P e-cash Paper.” The email included a link to the white paper, an outline of what would soon become a one trillion-dollar market. The first sentence of the email has become iconic among the Bitcoin community: “I’ve been working on a new electronic cash system that’s fully peer-to-peer, with no trusted third party.” Over the past 14 years, Bitcoin (BTC) has morphed from a hobbyist pastime into a globally recognized brand. Bitcoin has been …
