DeFi market cap drops 25% in one day

Published at: Oct. 8, 2020

The decentralized finance (DeFi) bubble continues to deflate, with crypto market data firm Sentiment reporting a 25% crash in the market capitalization of DeFi assets during yesterday alone.

In a blog post published Oct. 8, Santiment estimated that daily DeFi token trade volumes have fallen by 30% combined, while recent market leaders Sushi (SUSHI), Uniswap (UNI) and Yearn Finance (YFI) are among the hardest hit with weekly losses of 51%, 38% and 31% respectively.

“The crypto market has been engulfed in a sea of red this week, with most DeFi blue chips recording double digit losses over the past 7 days.”

Despite noting that crypto-Twitter has already emphatically declared the death of the entire DeFi experiment, Santiment claims to have identified “whale accumulation” activity taking place around several DeFi assets including Synthetix (SNX).

Santiment also noted that the combined value of DeFi assets at the time they last moved on the MVRV blockchain has dropped to an all-time low, “indicating undervaluation” at current price levels.

Recently launched DeFi indexes slumped to record lows this past week, with Binance Futures’ DeFi Composite Index crashing 20% yesterday. The index has now fallen 63% from its first day of trading in late August.

TokenSet’s DeFi Pulse Index (DPI) also fell 20% yesterday, slumping to tag a record low of $71 — posting a near 50% retracement since launching four weeks ago.

Olympus DAO chases a new ATH after fresh bond offerings and partnerships
The rapidly evolving world of blockchain technology offers a wide range of approaches and tokenomic models aimed at solving the blockchain trilemma of creating a decentralized, stable and secure network. One tokenomic model that has seen several variants over the past year is the 'rebase' model, which is designed in a way so that token balances can fluctuate over time depending on changes in the token price and the supply in circulation. Olympus (OHM) is a rebase project that has caught the attention of many in the crypto space over the past six months — in large part thanks to …

US Treasury targets NFTs for potential high-value art money laundering
The U.S. Department of the Treasury released a study on the high-value art market, highlighting the potential in the nonfungible tokens (NFT) space to conduct illicit money laundering or terror financing operations. The treasury’s “Study of the facilitation of money laundering and terror finance through the trade in works of art” suggested that the increasing use of art as an investment or financial asset could make the high-value art trades vulnerable to money laundering: “The emerging online art market may present new risks, depending on the structure and incentives of certain activity in this sector of the market (i.e., the …

Avalanche (AVAX) loses 30%+ in April, but its DeFi footprint leaves room to be bullish
Avalanche (AVAX) price is down more than 30% in April, but despite the negative price move, the smart contract platform remains a top contender for decentralized applications due to its scalability, low-cost transactions and its large footprint in the decentralized finance (DeFi) landscape. The network is compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM) and unique in that it does not face the same operational bottlenecks of high transaction fees and network congestion. Avalanche was able to amass over $9 billion in total value locked (TVL) by offering a proof-of-stake (PoS) layer-1 scaling solution. This indicator is extremely relevant because it …

Vector Finance (VTX) TVL hits a record high as the Curve Wars shift to Avalanche
The battle to attract stablecoin liquidity has been a trending theme across the cryptocurrency landscape for the past year, especially as decentralized finance users have come to realize the hefty APY that can be earned on dollar-peg assets. While Curve Finance remains the undisputed leader in interest bearing stablecoin liquidity pools, several new entrants have begun to climb the ranks, including Vector Finance (VTX), a protocol that enables Avalanche (AVAX) network users to generate boosted yields on their stablecoin positions. Data from CoinGecko shows that the price of VTX recently underwent a trend reversal as its price climbed 52% from …
