3 Ways to Turn Bitcoins Into Gift Cards

Published at: Feb. 26, 2015

If only everything were available for purchase in Bitcoin.

Oh, wait, it is.

Anything from plane tickets to houses, sex toys to groceries, can be purchased just by using CheapAir or BitPremier, Purse or Magic (respectively). But you can also just buy good ol'-fashioned gift cards.

The companies Gyft, eGifter, and newly-rebranded Gift Off stand out in the crypto-for-gift card space:

1. Gyft

Founded in 2012 with the aim to eliminate the use of physical gift cards, Gyft began accepting Bitcoin relatively early on. They offer cards for over 200 retailers, including:

Amazon Whole Foods Home Depot Starbucks Target Best Buy

New users are rewarded with a free US$5 card for signing up, and all purchases made in Bitcoin are rewarded with 3 % discounts via a points system.

2. eGifter

Seeking to cater to social shoppers, eGifter offers to track your friends' birthdays, make present recommendations, and connect to your friends via Facebook to prompt “crowdfunding” of the gift.

eGifter covers over 215 retailers, including:

eBay CVS Groupon Jiffy Lube REI Burger King

Dogecoin and Litecoin are also accepted in addition to Bitcoin, and eGifter offers discount reward points (similar to Gyft) for Bitcoin shoppers.

3. Gift Off

Recently rebranded from their former name, Pockio, Gift Off accepts the most cryptocurrencies by far: 24! They support the most popular, but have also recently added obscure currencies like Bits of Bullion, BitcoinDark, Darkcoin, HyperStake, DigiByte, Earthcoin, StartCoin, and Unobtanium.

Gift Off covers part of the digital goods niche, offering cards for 165 retailers including:

Apple Store Google Play store Steam Skype Spotify

There isn't currently a reward points program, but Gift Off purchases are commission-free.

The Phone is the New Wallet

These services all store the gift cards you purchase in your account, retrievable at any time. In-person use of the cards (versus online shopping) is facilitated by downloading the corresponding apps.

The apps load the gift cards with bar codes, which are then scanned by cashiers. (Bonus: watch your cashier's face when you tell her you bought your card with Bitcoin.)

Bitcoin (BTC) is a dynamic monetary asset with the potential of being both — a commodity and a currency. For instance, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) classified BTC as a commodity, whereas El Salvador made Bitcoin a legal tender in 2021. So, does this make BTC a store of value or a medium of exchange? It can do both — On one hand, BTC can be added to treasuries as an inflationary hedge. On the other hand, it could also serve the retail purpose of paying for routine expenses. Almost over a decade ago, the first person to utilize …

Streaming Service Twitch Removes Crypto Payment Options, Reddit User Reports
Amazon-owned streaming service Twitch has evidently removed Bitcoin (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH) as payment options for subscriptions. The change was reported by a Reddit user on March 23. The user noted that Twitch had offered an option to pay with BTC and BCH employing BitPay as a payment processor, but has since “removed it in the last couple of weeks as a payment method for all countries.” One user, seemingly outraged, noted that they canceled all of their Twitch subscriptions and sent an assistance ticket to the company. On March 20, another Reddit user claimed that Streamlabs — a …

Grin’s Mimblewimble Privacy Model Under Threat After Alleged Break-In
On Nov. 18, crypto researcher Ivan Bogatyy published an article on Medium claiming that he had found an extremely easy way of bypassing Grin’s Mimblewimble privacy protocol. As part of his efforts, Bogatyy stated that he was able to trace over 96% of all Grin-related transactions in real time, including the addresses of the senders as well as recipients associated with these sets of transactions. What’s more striking is the fact that Bogatyy claims he was able to achieve all this by spending just $60 a week on Amazon Web Services computational power, which helped connect him to Grin’s native …

How can UK-based businesses accept Bitcoin?
What are the pros and cons of accepting Bitcoin payments? Accepting Bitcoin payments is advantageous due to lower fees than credit and debit cards, expansion of customer base and real-time bank balances. However, risks like volatility and cybercrime may undermine these benefits. Cryptocurrency payments help save excessive credit and debit card processing fees as they are decentralized and do not need intermediaries to verify the transaction. Moreover, merchants do not incur overseas currency exchange changes if payments are made in BTC or other cryptocurrencies. High transaction speed is another benefit of accepting Bitcoin payments, allowing businesses to receive payments in …
