Mainframe-rebrand HiFi launches fixed-rate lending protocol

Published at: Feb. 17, 2021

HiFi — the recent rebrand of onetime decentralized application platform Mainframe, which is focused on decentralized finance — announced today the launch of a fixed-rate DeFi lending platform.

“Fixed-rate lending is an important milestone for DeFi,” said HiFi CEO Doug Leonard in a press release. “Investors and traders need less-volatile options so that they can plan finances in advance, have predictability in expenses and hedge investments with certainty.”

The launch is scheduled for 5:00 pm UTC.

With a lending product, HiFi is entering into a marketplace featuring some stiff competition. Aave and Cream dominate with nearly $6 billion in total value locked between them, and top 10 protocol SushiSwap is planning a lending offering, BentoBox, for later in the year.

HiFi aims to stand out with a focus on tokenized debt and yield-bearing instruments as collateral. Yield-bearing instruments allow for the fixed rates HiFi advertises, in addition to enabling “the opportunity to better map out finances and trading strategies” with tools like flash loan rate rebalancing and yield swaps.

The announcement notes that while the protocol will initially only offer “USDC stablecoin borrowing with WBTC (wrapped Bitcoin) collateral,” the platform will quickly onboard other collateral types.

In a statement to Cointelegraph, the team mentioned Uniswap pool tokens — which yield trading fees but are a notoriously tricky asset to use as collateral — and Compound cTokens as chief candidates.

“Likely the first composability integration we will see is with Uniswap LP tokens or Compound cToken collateral. The team has early versions of these integrations built at this point in time.”

Likewise, there may be a push for big-name users out of the gate. In an explainer video, Leonard made note that enterprise clients prefer the certainty of fixed rates. To this end, the team hinted that there may be a range of developments forthcoming:

“We are explicitly interested, during the growth phase of our protocol, to push the boundaries of what can and cannot be an effective collateral. I think you will see some of the most interesting stories in DeFi come from our team over the next 12 months. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

HiFi’s MFT token is down 0.6% on the day to $0.0233, with a market capitalization of $217,000,000. The token is up nearly 2,000% on the year, following a run that took place after the announced rebrand.

No more wrapped Bitcoin? This DeFi platform brings native BTC lending to Ethereum
Until recently, the majority of Bitcoin (BTC) lending took place on centralized platforms. This was predominantly because of the cumbersome process involved in tokenizing Bitcoin into a wrapped ERC-20 version before it could be deposited on the Ethereum (ETH) network. The resulting implication of this inconvenience was not just the additional transaction fees and slippage incurred but a fragmented decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem. Currently, only 1% of Bitcoin is circulating on Ethereum. BiFi is a platform that facilitates real Bitcoin lending on DeFi by connecting the Bitcoin and Ethereum networks directly. The platform describes itself as “like Compound or Aave, …

Adjusted risk-tranching product provides different levels of risks tolerance combining several assets in portfolio
Decentralized finance (DeFi) could become the most radical development to come of blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies by potentially ushering in a new foundation for global finance. One of the projects that set some early precedents for DeFi was MakerDAO, which pioneered the use of having a distinct token for governance, with MKR, and a stablecoin backed by cryptocurrency as collateral — DAI. Next came Compound (COMP), which let customers borrow and lend select cryptocurrencies using a marginalized system that controlled collateral risk. These early developments have led to the DeFi market we see today, with many yielding products seeming to …

Aave v3 launch triggers 50% rally from long-term descending channel pattern
The decentralized finance (DeFi) market has been undergoing a period of maturation over the past year and many of last year's fast risers have faded into obscurity but this does not mean the formerly "famous" protocols have not continued to build. One blue-chip project that is regaining momentum is Aave (AAVE), a non-custodial liquidity protocol that allows users to lend, borrow or stake their assets to earn yield from their holdings. Data from Cointelegraph Markets Pro and TradingView shows that the price of AAVE has rallied 110% from a low of $114 on March 15 to a daily high at …

How long will the crypto bear market last? Raoul Pal's macro analysis
Macro investor Raoul Pal is convinced that the current crypto bear market will end only once the Fed eases its hawkish monetary policy by halting interest rate hikes. That could happen in the next couple of months, according to Pal's predictions. “The Fed are unlikely to raise rates as far and as fast as people expect. My guess is they probably stop raising rates sometime in the summer and that will be it,” he said in an exclusive interview with Cointelegraph. Pal sees the combination of high interest rates and fear of an upcoming recession as the main macro factors …

Crisis in crypto lending shines light on industry vulnerabilities
The crypto market has entered a bearish phase as prices of major cryptocurrencies have fallen to a four-year low. The current downturn in the crypto market has driven several crypto firms to go out of business, while many have made severe job cuts to remain afloat. The crypto market crisis began with the Terra debacle that saw $40 billion in investors’ money vanish from the market. At the time, the crypto market showed good resistance against such a massive collapse. However, the after-effects of the collapse had a greater impact on the crypto market, especially crypto lending firms, which many …
