This trading platform has a novel approach to welcoming new users
A fully regulated brokerage with more than 100,000 users globally has introduced a novel way of welcoming new customers to its platform. Quantfury says users who invite their friends to join the platform will receive stock or cryptocurrency as a reward — with a value of anywhere between $10 and $250 — and their friends will receive the same. According to the company, this could deliver some interesting opportunities that a user may not have contemplated before… such as owning Facebook or Google stock, or gaining exposure to Bitcoin or Ethereum. In a move to stand head and shoulders above …

$50B wiped from Tesla after BTC buy — but MasterCard and Twitter surge
Electric car manufacturer Tesla has seen more than $55 billion wiped from its market cap since announcing the purchase of $1.5 billion in Bitcoin four days ago — but Twitter and MasterCard have headed in the other direction. Since Tesla’s announcement on Monday, the electric car giant’s stock price has dropped 7% from $869.52 ($834.6 billion market cap). It is currently trading at $811.66 ($779 billion market cap). While there may be other factors behind the share price drop, some investors, such as Baker Avenue Wealth Management chief strategist King Lip, are concerned that holding 8% of the company's cash …

Mastercard announces support for crypto on its network
Mastercard has announced plans to support cryptocurrencies in 2021, paving the way for its nearly one billion users to spend digital assets at more than 30 million merchants. The firm believes this may open merchants up to new customers and build loyalty with existing customers who are already migrating to digital assets over traditional fiat options. “It’s about choice. Mastercard isn’t here to recommend you start using cryptocurrencies. But we are here to enable customers, merchants and businesses to move digital value” While the global payments giant noted it is planning to support stablecoins due to their “reliability and security,” …

Will Apple be the next company to adopt Bitcoin after Tesla?
Earlier today, Tesla Motors announced it had made a major Bitcoin purchase and planned to introduce crypto payments in the future. Some in the industry are now speculating that Apple will be the next institutional player to adopt the crypto asset. In a market report from Royal Bank of Canada Dominion Securities analyst Paul Steves, the introduction of the tech company into crypto could create more than $40 billion in annual revenue and make waves across the industry. He based this prediction on the history of Bitcoin (BTC) revenue at payments company Square, which reported more than $1.6 billion in …

Time to shine? Crypto should be given a chance after GameStop drama
What happened to GameStop’s stock at the end of January will be remembered by investors for years to come, as it was probably the first time in the history of the “free market” that a group of self-described internet “degenerates” outsmarted a bunch of Wall Street pros at their own game. As a recap, on Jan 27, when the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell sharply by over 2% — in large part due to the United States Federal Reserve announcing its move to maintain interest rates around the zero percent mark — shares of video game retailer GameStop (GME) and …

Apple updates iOS to fix crypto wallet security vulnerabilities
Apple has issued new security updates for its mobile operating system after the iPhone maker discovered vulnerabilities that could compromise cryptocurrency wallets. The security updates, which were released Tuesday, affect iOS 14.4 and iPadOS 14.4. The vulnerabilities reportedly allowed hackers to gain remote access to a target system, thereby exposing the user’s cryptocurrency wallet. Pete Kim, Coinbase’s head engineer, warned iPhone users to update their operating system immediately. “If you are using a mobile crypto wallet on an iOS device, be sure to update iOS as soon as possible!” Kim tweeted Tuesday. “The update includes a fix for a remote …

Injecting Apple-like ‘quality-control’ into DeFi is what we need
If you’re an Apple App Store user, then you’re probably aware of the recent legal drama surrounding the updates to the App Store guidelines. It’s a reasonably open secret that the App Store is designed to be at its core, more difficult for app developers to deploy their apps on than competitors' offerings, pushing for a “quality over quantity” environment to protect its user base. With this push by Apple, we have just witnessed with the hammer coming down on the conservative social media app Parler following in the footsteps of Twitter and Facebook permanently banning former-U.S. President Donald Trump …

Why you wouldn’t eat chicken nuggets, and why you shouldn’t trust Big Data
Just like you might think twice about eating chicken nuggets once you see how they are made, you’d likely hesitate about volunteering your personal information once you see how it is used and monetized. Freedom has become one of the world’s most commoditized assets — and over the years, the internet has eroded it. We live in a world where we’re confronted with 5,000 words of terms and conditions when buying sneakers. Crucial details about what companies do with our data is buried in masses of legalese — prompting most of us to click “I agree” without thinking of the …

Tesla meets crypto as FTX launches fractionalized stock trading
Major cryptocurrency derivatives exchange FTX has launched trading in “fractional stocks offerings” — tokenized products representing the shares of global firms. The products were launched on Oct. 29 in partnership with German-licensed investment Firm CM-Equity and tokenization firm Digital Assets AG. More than one dozen equity and crypto pairings are available for trade on FTX, including fractionalized Tesla (TSLA), Apple (APPL), and Amazon (AMZN) derivatives. Fractionalized ownership lets the derivatives be broken down into smaller sizes than whole units, allowing retail traders to speculate on expensive stocks like Tesla’s with less capital. “These products demonstrate a powerful future, in which …

Congress’ renewed attack on Big Tech may clear the field for decentralization
On Tuesday, a House subcommittee put out a massive report that places Big Tech in the crosshairs of major antitrust reforms. The four firms at the center of the report — Apple, Google, Facebook and Amazon — have been in hot water with Congress for some time. But while the tone of the recent conversation is punitive towards those firms, it also seems to envision a broader shift to new rules that would stop tech from this level of centralization again. Obviously, that’s a lofty ambition, and sweeping political ideals don’t make it into market practice without extensive compromise. Nonetheless, …

Apple forces Coinbase to change its crypto products, says CEO
Brian Armstrong, the CEO of United States cryptocurrency exchange Coinbase, alleges that Apple is stifling innovation in crypto and sidelining DeFi to protect itself from competition. In a Twitter thread published on Sept. 11, Armstrong doubled down on his earlier claims that Apple continues to block some functionalities for cryptocurrency developers. The CEO alleged that other cryptocurrency firms are “reluctant to speak out on these topics for fear of retaliation,” but that he feels the need to speak out as Coinbase has exhausted regular channels for dialog with Apple and has reached a “dead end.” According to Armstrong, Apple has …
