New legislation may make it possible for Binance US, the American branch of crypto exchange Binance, to open its doors to all traders in every state by next year. According to a Sept. 15 tweet from Binance U.S. CEO Catherine Coley, the digital asset marketplace has just launched in Georgia, allowing users to buy, trade, and earn digital assets. Binance’s famously light Know Your Customer requirements are being targeted by the current owners of Zaif, a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange that got hacked in 2018. Plaintiffs are claiming that its weak KYC requirements and high daily withdrawal limit facilitated the laundering of $60 million stolen from the exchange. The lawsuit was filed in the Northern District of California by representatives of Fisco cryptocurrency exchange, which acquired Zaif soon after the hack. Fisco is accusing Binance of helping launder $9 million in cryptocurrency, and is seeking compensation for these alleged losses. The plaintiffs maintain that Binance had the power to identify …
Binance U.S., the regulatory-friendly United States branch of crypto exchange Binance, has added Alabama to its list of approved states. Binance added Alabama to its list in a Sept. 13 announcement, complete with a football graphic as homage to one of the state’s favorite pastimes. The announcement also listed necessary steps for Alabamians getting started on the platform, including account creation and verification. Binance unveiled its ban on U.S. customers in June 2019. The company subsequently released a regulatory-sensitive version of the platform months later, called Binance US. The U.S. platform’s terms and conditions list 12 restricted states, although Alabama …
A new report by the Financial Action Task Force, or FATF, details a series of red flags that can help identify illicit activity involving cryptocurrencies. Among them are a general set of guidelines involving exchanges in jurisdictions with weaker regulations, where Binance is seemingly singled out for often moving to avoid stronger regulatory oversight. The report, published on Sept. 14, lists a variety of red flags for spotting money laundering or terrorism financing, grouped by categories. Most red flags cited are commonly seen in traditional finance as well: young or old people suddenly transacting for huge sums of value, or …
Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao welcomed more Ethereum-based DeFi projects to join the Binance Smart Chain (BSC) platform. In a tweet discussion with another user, Zhao explained that this step would reduce the load on the Ethereum network, which will, in turn, lead to a reduction in Ethereum's gas fees. Zhao later stressed that Binance Smart Chain is not a replacement or competitor to the Ethereum network and that it is compatible with it. Zhao added that Binance Smart Chain provides the smart contract creators with more options: "BSC never aimed to replace ETH, BSC is just ETH-compatible. Smart projects are …
On August 20, a Tether swap worth $1 billion happened — it involved Binance, Bitfinex, and a major fire dumpster on TRON (TRX) blockchain. Tether flows. Source: Flipside Crypto. From time to time, the news of Tether burning some of its supply on one blockchain and then minting it anew on another appears in the headlines. Although it sounds easy enough, in reality, it involves quite a bit of planning and more importantly — trust. Tether $1 billion swap transactions. Source: Cointelegraph. Binance’s Changpeng Zhao has received more than his fair share of criticism since Binance’s 2017 launch. As a high-profile crypto figure and the CEO of one of the sector’s largest companies, that is to be expected. But the denunciation leveled at him after the anonymous Chef Nomi’s SushiSwap sell-off scandal has been unwarranted. Few things are more antithetical to the ethos of decentralized finance than having a single figure being the arbiter of the quality or viability of a project. If crypto and decentralized finance are borne of the desire to democratize financial markets and liberate the public from the …
Chef Nomi has cooked up what appears to be the biggest exit scam of 2020, but should others be held accountable as well? Binance, like many other major exchanges, listed SUSHI raw and unaudited on Sept. 1. The token price doubled upon listing. The token contract was deployed on Aug. 26, it started trading two days later, and the first and only security audit was published on Sept. 3 (the firm confirmed to Cointelegraph that it had not discussed its audit of SushiSwap with Binance prior to publication). Binance’s listing guidelines purport that the exchange does a lot of due …
Russia’s new cryptocurrency-related law, “On Digital Financial Assets,” or DFA, seems to have had little impact on the local cryptocurrency industry so far. In its current form, the DFA law essentially provides legal status to digital assets like Bitcoin (BTC), but prohibits their use for payments in Russia. As the DFA law is poised to be officially adopted in less than four months, Cointelegraph talked to major crypto firms operating in Russia to get their take on how the new law can impact their business. Based on comments from executives at companies like Binance, Waves, Paxful, LocalBitcoins, and Wirex, companies …
Eterbase, a Slovakia-based crypto exchange, was recently the victim of a $5M hack. According to an update from Eterbase, some of these funds appear to have ended up on a number of popular exchanges, including Binance, Huobi Global, and HitBTC. Binance CEO's Changpeng Zhao, or CZ, seemed to support efforts to stop the circulation of these stolen funds, replying: “Our security team was on this quite early. Will do what we can to assist.” Through Telegram, Eterbase also published a list of the hot wallets compromised by the hack. These included Bitcoin (BTC), Ehereum (ETH), Tron (TRX), Tezos (XTZ), Algorand …
Following the launch of Binance’s Smart Chain, an Ethereum-compatible blockchain with a keen focus on decentralized finance, the exchange is now doubling down on its strategy to attract DeFi projects. At the company’s World of DeFi summit on Thursday, Binance’s CEO Changpeng Zhao announced the launch of a $100 million investment fund devoted to projects building on the Smart Chain. The fund will be used for a variety of purposes, including seed funding for projects building on the smart chain. The company says the maximum investment will be $100,000 — admittedly quite low in the world of seed fundraising, especially …
