Dogecoin imitator Shiba Inu pumps 146% on Binance listing
Having emerged with the self-applied moniker of “Dogecoin Killer,” the latest cryptocurrency to succeed on laughs alone is making its way to Binance. Shiba Inu (SHIB) burst into CoinMarketCap’s top 20 rankings just two days ago, likely a response by traders to the hype surrounding Dogecoin (DOGE). Within 48 hours, the SHIB token went from a valuation of $0.000003 to $0.000032 — a 966% increase, which added to over 2,300,000% growth since the start of the year. When Binance announced it would list SHIB in its innovation zone (a high-risk trading feature) on Monday morning, the token’s valuation more than …

DEX volumes have already surpassed $120B in 2021
Ethereum-powered decentralized exchanges, or DEXes, continue to surge despite high transaction fees — with DEXes processing more than $120 billion in 2021 so far. According to Ethereum market analytics platform Dune Analytics, combined DEX volumes posted a new record of $63 billion in January. February's volume currently sits at $59 billion and is on track to hit $67 billion at the month’s end. DEXes have already processed more volume in the first two months of 2021 than during all previous years combined. The Ethereum-powered DEX sector is still dominated by Uniswap and Sushiswap, who account for 65% of February’s trade …

Four of the top 70 crypto assets by market cap are Bitcoin
Tokenized Bitcoin is booming, with the increasing demand from DeFi combined with BTC’s recent meteoric price rise has resulted in three Bitcoin tokenization protocols ranking among the 70 largest crypto markets. According to popular market data aggregators CoinGecko and CoinMarketCap, Wrapped Bitcoin (WBTC) currently ranks as the 13th-largest market boasting a capitalization of $4.04 billion, with roughly 0.6% of Bitcoin’s supply currently locked in the protocol. Huobi BTC (HBTC) ranks 56th with a market cap of $660 million, followed by the 63rd-ranked renBTC (RENBTC) with a capitalization of $510 million. However, the emergence of Bitcoin (BTC) tokenization protocols as top-ranked …

Multiple DeFi mainstays crack top 20 in long-awaited ‘Great Repricing’
Hardcore decentralized finance (DeFi) adherents woke up today to a long-awaited sight on Coingecko’s top 100 rankings by marketcap: native tokens for popular DeFi platforms Synthetix and Aave have cracked into the top 20, an event DeFi observers have heralded as “The Great Repricing.” DeFi investors, users, and builders have long argued that the sector writ large is wildly undervalued relative to other cryptocurrency projects given DeFi’s growing userbases, cash flows from protocol fees, and soaring levels of activity compared to “zombie chain” layer-1 networks scattered throughout the top of the marketcap rankings. Aave and Synthetix have broken the top …

Telling the truth? How crypto data aggregators fight fake exchange volumes
Today, cryptocurrency data aggregators are tasked with being the first point-of-contact for newbies entering the space and also providing up-to-date information to experienced users. While the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a global economic downturn, the crypto industry is booming. Previously skeptical investors have started to test the waters, and data providers are dying to make a lasting impression. Market data aggregators, or data providers, are platforms that collect inputs from various exchanges to present users with data on trade volume, historical asset prices and market capitalization. These platforms usually offer their own APIs for data distribution to blockchain projects and …

CoinGecko challenges CoinMarketCap's dominance as a crypto market resource
The gap is narrowing between crypto analytics providers CoinMarketCap and CoinGecko when it comes to the number of website visits each receives per month. According to a Dec. 1 report from news outlet The Ken, CoinGecko had 20.6 million monthly desktop and mobile visitors as of October, compared with CoinMarketCap’s 29 million. These numbers represent a 135% increase in site traffic for the Singapore-based firm since May, when CoinMarketCap drew four times as many visitors as the competitor. While both websites saw small peaks in traffic during July, CoinMarketCap has not significantly widened the gap since Binance acquired the site …

Yield farmers make 500% returns, but most can't read smart contracts
The majority of yield farmers do not understand how to read the potentially risky smart contracts that underpin the decentralized finance (DeFi) ecosystem — but that hasn’t stopped them making huge profits. Crypto market data aggregator CoinGecko has published its findings from a survey of 1,347 of its users about yield farming, finding that 93% of respondents claim to have reaped a financial return of at least 500%. However around half of users are currently farming with less than $1,000, making high gas fees a significant concern in the community, even though three quarters were still willing to pay more …

CoinGecko Adds Crypto Exchanges' Cybersecurity Ratings to Trust Score
Cryptocurrency market data aggregator CoinGecko has updated its Trust Score algorithm to consider the cybersecurity standards of the more than 400 cryptocurrency exchanges listed on its platform. From July 1, 20% of CoinGecko’s Trust Score will be determined according to a cybersecurity rating provided by security technology company Hacken. According to an announcement, the algorithm update will provide “a more holistic overview of cryptocurrency exchanges.” Speaking to Cointelegraph, CoinGecko co-founder and COO Bobby Ong stated that the firm has “wanted to work closely with a cybersecurity company to incorporate exchanges' cybersecurity score since [introducing] Trust Score in May 2019,” but …

Crypto Exchange Ranking Methods Still Contested as CMC Takes More Heat
For reasons of vanity as well as for those of industry health, it’s important to have a good method for ranking crypto exchanges and coins. But as the past few years have shown, no foolproof method has yet been developed. CoinMarketCap has enjoyed the de facto status of being the leading ranking platform, but according to some, a string of controversies has shaken faith in its ability to provide neutral results. CMC’s first flirtation with scandal happened when Bitwise published a report suggesting 95% of the volume reported on the website was fake. The revelation rocked the sector, as many …

Many People Know About DeFi, But Few of Them Use It
Cryptocurrency price aggregator CoinGecko conducted a survey with almost 700 of its users to learn more about the trends in decentralized finance (DeFi). The report, published on May 20, highlights that many cryptocurrency users heard about DeFi and some of its better known projects, but few of these are actually using it. Out of its sample of 694 respondents, only 11% said they haven’t heard anything about DeFi. Unsurprisingly, the most well-known and used DeFi app — as defined by CoinGecko — is MetaMask. About 72% of respondents heard of it, and 73% of them used it. The dominance can …

CoinGecko COO: ‘Hard for CoinMarketCap to Stay Neutral’
Just one week after exchange Binance announced its acquisition of CoinMarketCap (CMC) — one of the most-referenced crypto data websites — some prominent figures in the crypto community are speaking out. Bobby Ong, Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of CoinGecko, gave an interview to My Two Gwei on April 6. Among the topics discussed was the crypto data website’s $400 million acquisition and the role it may play in the future. Ong highlighted his company to “uphold data integrity” in the face of “many new exchanges… faking their volume.” One of the targets of the COO during his interview …
