Bankman-Fried misguides regulators by directing them away from centralized finance
Last month’s proposal from Sam Bankman-Fried, CEO of crypto exchange FTX, for regulators to establish a litany of standards for the cryptocurrency industry poses an existential threat to decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms and entrepreneurial spirit. As one of a select few with the capital and clout to move the needle in the discussion surrounding crypto regulation, Bankman-Fried, also known as SBF, should be taking a stand to protect DeFi by directing regulators to where they’re urgently needed: centralized finance (CeFi) platforms and centralized exchanges (CEXs). In a section of his blueprint for regulatory oversight and industry standards addressing DeFi, SBF …

Celsius Network’s bungling showed why centralization can’t protect privacy
In Celsius Network’s recent court filing, the billion-dollar centralized finance (CeFi) platform exposed more than 14,000 pages of customer identity and on-chain transaction data without user consent — a prescient reminder that privacy absent decentralization is no privacy at all. As part of its bankruptcy proceedings, CeFi lending giant Celsius Network disclosed names and on-chain transaction data of tens of thousands of its customers in an Oct. 5 court filing. While Celsius’ user base complied with standard Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures in order to open personal accounts with the CeFi platform, none consented to nor could have anticipated a …

How decentralized exchanges have evolved and why it's good for users
Decentralized exchanges (DEXs) first appeared in the cryptocurrency industry in 2014, allowing users to trade a wide number of assets peer-to-peer. However, the first iterations of these platforms could be difficult to use. But, since their inception, developers have worked to make them easier and more accessible for users. Decentralized exchanges work by using smart contracts to fulfill orders placed by traders, allowing users to trade directly with each other instead of relying on a centralized platform. Unlike a centralized exchange (CEX), when traders engage with a DEX, their funds are not stored on the exchange. Instead, users initiate trades …

What new EU sanctions mean for crypto exchanges and their Russian client
Nine months into the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, sanctions against the latter have continued to grow at an aggressive pace. This time around, legislators for the European Union announced that they are introducing a complete ban on all cross-border crypto payments between Russia and its citizens. To elaborate, a prohibition of all “crypto-asset wallets, accounts, or custody services, irrespective of the amount of the wallet” has now been initiated by the EU in response to Russia’s continued annexation of Ukrainian land, repeated mobilization of troops within the country and threats of nuclear escalation. It is worth noting that previous …

Speaking to Cointelegraph, Hassan Ahmed, CEO of Coinbase Singapore and the exchanges’ regional director for Southeast Asia, said Singapore is a key institutional market for the exchange in Asia due to businesses there continuing to show interest in and gain exposure to crypto. FTX’s $1.4B bid on Voyager Digital assets: A gambit or a way out for users?
In September, cryptocurrency exchange FTX US secured the winning bid for the assets of embattled crypto brokerage firm Voyager Digital with a bid of approximately $1.4 billion. The bid was made up of the fair market value of Voyager’s crypto holdings “at a to-be-determined date in the future.” According to Voyager, at current market prices, the fair value of its holdings was estimated around $1.3 billion, and the deal included an “additional consideration,” estimated to be worth approximately $111 million. Since then, new details on the case have emerged, with court filings showing that the cash paid for Voyager Digital …

Voyager's auction did not serve depositors' best interests, alleges Wave Financial rep
The assets of crypto brokerage firm Voyager Digital would face a drastically different fate if FTX did not win the bid, claimed a spokesperson of Wave Financial's speaking to Cointelegraph, arguing that better bids were on the table, but they "were passed over for strictly cash offers." Wave, an SEC-registered digital asset management company with over $1 billion in assets under management (AUM), participated in the auction process, bidding a slightly lower amount than FTX for the assets. FTX secured the winning bid with an amount of $1.4 billion, which must now be approved by the U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Wave …
