New crypto tax solution is making accurate calculations quick and easy
Organizing taxes has always proved a difficult process for companies and individuals during the yearly tax season. With crypto, this process becomes even more complicated. Although cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) appear similar to fiat currencies, in the eyes of the taxman, these digital assets need to be treated differently. This means cryptocurrency transactions may need to be reported as capital gains or losses. That is why it’s important to keep track of crypto transactions over time. Software like Cointelli makes it easy for both individuals to file crypto tax returns and for tax professionals to offer crypto-tax …

Decentralized autonomous organizations: Tax considerations
A decentralized autonomous organizations (DAO) is an organization that is managed by a computer program powered by blockchain and run by a group of individuals who collectively vote to decide on organizational proposals. Typically, each member’s voting power is determined by their percentage interest in the DAO, which is calculated by dividing the digital assets contributed by a member by the total amount of digital assets in the DAO. A DAO generally (but not always) operates without the need for a board of directors or other governing body and can provide an effective and (potentially) secure platform to gather individuals …

A bill previously introduced by Washington Representative Suzan DelBene aims to exempt crypto users from paying taxes on transactions under $200. If signed into law, the bill could stop the Internal Revenue Service, or IRS, from requiring U.S. filers to pay taxes on capital gains from crypto transactions of $200 or more. “Antiquated regulations around virtual currency do not take into account …

PoS validator turns down IRS tax refund offer, pushes for clear policy on staking taxation
A United States couple suing the federal tax agency over Tezos (XTZ) staking rewards taxation chose to forego a tactical victory and engage in a court battle that could eventually result in policy change. Joshua and Jessica Jarrett, who run a node on the Tezos network (thus “baking” new blocks, in the ecosystem’s lingo), have sued the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) over the taxes paid on the XTZ tokens created in 2019. The Jarretts filed a refund claim on upwards of $3,000 paid on the tokens, which the IRS ignored. The fundamental point of contention underlying the lawsuit is the …

Court victory precedent: IRS may not tax staking rewards until sold
A Nashville couple’s lawsuit over taxes they paid on unclaimed and unsold Tezos staking rewards is coming to an end with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) agreeing to issue them a refund. The decision may set a precedent for future guidance on how crypto rewards earned through staking are taxed. At present Proof-of-Stake staking rewards are classified as income, with tax payable as they are gained. The new development suggests they should be only taxed when they are sold for USD. The Jarretts filed a complaint against the United States government in May 2021 which stated that the 8,876 Tezos …

Things to know (and fear) about new IRS crypto tax reporting
The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (H.R. 3684) put crypto in the crosshairs, where Congress and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) hope to scoop up enormous tax dollars. This reporting regime is projected to rake in an astounding $28 billion over the next ten years. No other provision in this massive recently enacted federal law is supposed to produce tax dollars that are even close. If you don’t think that means the IRS is coming for your crypto in a very big way and that Congress is trying hard to facilitate it, think again. The crypto community was outraged when …
