Vitalik Buterin: NFTs can be a social good, not just a casino for rich celebrities
Ethereum co-creator Vitalik Buterin believes NFTs can be applied to socially relevant causes such as charities and funding public goods, but not while the technology is still viewed as a “casino that largely benefits already-wealthy celebrities.” The author of the Ethereum whitepaper said there was little social value in helping celebrities like Elon Musk add another $1 million to their bank balance by selling NFTs. But he does believe that with support and coordination, non-fungible tokens could have a significant impact on other areas of society. In a blog post titled “The Most Important Scarce Resource is Legitimacy,” Buterin said …

Square’s $297M stake in Tidal could unlock DLT features, analyst says
Square’s majority stake in Jay-Z’s streaming service Tidal could potentially result in some blockchain-related functionalities on the platform, according to one analyst. Avivah Litan, a technology analyst at consulting company Gartner, suggested that Square’s $297 million investment could push Tidal to start taking advantage of new technologies like blockchain and cryptocurrencies, Reuters reports Friday. With Square’s help, Tidal would specifically benefit from the technology of non-fungible tokens, or NFTs, which allows artists to certify ownership for photos, videos and other digital content, the expert noted. A new trend? Non-crypto CEOs and celebrities embrace Bitcoin on Twitter
A growing number of business leaders and celebrities — e.g., Elon Musk, Jack Dorsey, Alex Ohanian and, most recently, Ricardo Salinas — have added the Bitcoin hashtag to their Twitter biographies. It hasn’t gone unnoticed. When Elon Musk added #Bitcoin to his bio in late January, Bitcoin soared by 20%. If indeed a succession of billionaires and tech moguls have taken the Bitcoin pledge — whatever that might entail — what is their motivation? Are they trying to manipulate the market, for instance — or promote their brand? Could they be just looking to pull the collective leg of crypto’s …
