Authorities with South Korea’s customs service have reportedly arrested 16 people involved in illegal foreign exchange transactions connected to crypto assets worth roughly $2 billion. According to a Tuesday report from South Korean news agency Newsis, the country’s customs authorities plan to prosecute 2 unnamed individuals linked to the illicit transactions, impose fines on 7 people related to negligence, and continue investigating the remaining seven. Singapore court rules in favor of Bithumb founder in acquisition case
The court drama behind the acquisition of South Korean crypto exchange Bithumb has been going on for several years, but in an unexpected development, a Singapore court has made a ruling against Kim Byung-gun, who has originally accused the owner of Bithumb, Lee Jung-hoon, in defrauding him. Busan City announces FTX partnership to build local exchange
South Korea’s second-largest city Busan has announced a partnership with crypto trading platform FTX to build a local crypto exchange and foster blockchain development. Sam Bankman-Fried’s FTX will assist in creating the Busan Digital Asset Exchange as per an official statement from the Busan Metropolitan City on Aug. 30. The Bahamian-based firm will also support the city in fostering the growth of the local blockchain industry. Australia’s financial regulator, Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC), has pledged to put crypto assets and decentralized finance (DeFi) firmly in its sights over the next four years. Korean financial watchdog to block tens of unregistered exchange websites
Unregistered cryptocurrency exchanges operating in South Korea could see their services grind to a halt as the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) takes action against 16 foreign-based firms. The FIU has notified its investigative authority that 16 virtual asset service providers have been carrying out business without the necessary registrations. Korean police seize crypto for unpaid traffic fines in trial
A South Korean town near Seoul has been successfully operating a pilot program that allows police to seize crypto from the exchange accounts of individuals with delinquent traffic fines.
